If I can't set the device up, it's useless to me. Unable to install the file, it went into a catatonic state from which I could not get it to recover or even power down. Neither the program that came with the unit nor the written instructions gave me a human contact method. The installation instructions that came with the device did not accurately represent the process through which the unit led me during initial setup. I'm on my way back to Garmin. My system couldn't do the job at once, so it took several restarts. The "latest map guarantee" feature involved a download of roughly 850 Mb. After it finally completed the download (the job took more than three hours), the device wouldn't accept the new file because it didn't have enough data storage space.
Finally I unplugged it from my mac and tried it on a pc. Guess what. So I restarted the download, and it did the same. After a little while it FINALLY WORKED. I finally got fed up and called tomtom support. I have finally got my tomtom setup after a week.
Well about half way through it froze. DIDN'T WORK. As soon as I got it I plugged it in to the computer in hope of installing a new map. They said that it was the wrong map that the tomtom server had given me, so I attempted to install the new one. So in other words, if you only have a mac don't buy tomtom. So after waiting for 3 hours for it to download, it was off to the installation.
I did this a couple of times.
The directions seem to be mosly accurate. It takes up to 5 minutes to find sattelite, which is a pain when you need to get somewhere quickly. I feel like it would be just as fast to get directions from googlemaps or mapquest before leaving, seeing as it takes forever for the gps to figure out it's new location. This product is not as helpful as I'd hoped. I read many good reviews and thought the tomtom was my best bet.
You can't go wrong with this GPS. I can't justify the enormous price difference between what I have paid for a built in navi and this portable TT that can go from car to car. I took my chances that she'd be ok with that and I have to say if that was ever really a problem it's been corrected because if it was any louder you'd hear it in the next car over.I've bought the GPS system in my last 2 autos but will probably buy a TT for the next.
(To tell the truth, I bought it in part for me because I felt safer knowing she had it). The screen is big & bright, clear & colorful. We purchased this TT XL-S 4.3" for our daughter as a high school graduation gift.
I read a few reviews on here prior to purchase that said it doesn't speak the turn by turn directions loud enough. We're very impressed with it. Initial set up was quick & easy and she was able to start using it without having to read the directions (the men out there should like that-heehee).
Very user friendly.
But once I updated the map, the device seemed to have difficulty identifying and maintaining satellite signals. I may have gotten a random dud. I ended up spending another $40 and went with a Garmin model that I'm having much better luck with. It also struggled with correctly locating where I was actually at. At first it worked fine out of the box. It identified satellites pretty quickly and seemed pretty reliable.
